The National Center for Educational Statistics reports that in 2000, young adults living in families with incomes in the lowest 20 percent of all family incomes were six times as likely than their peers from families in the top 20 percent of the income distribution to drop out of high school.
In October 2000, some 3.8 million young adults were not enrolled in a high school program and had not completed high school. These youths accounted for 10.9 percent of the 34.6 million 16- through 24-year-olds in the United States in 2000.
